Just Engaged? A Guide to Wedding Planning.

Huge congratulations on getting engaged! This is an extremely exciting time for you, your friends & families! Before the checklists and timelines take over, allow yourselves to enjoy this season of life. Celebrate with your friends and family, plan an engagement dinner or party if that feels right, and take in all the excitement that this chapter has for you! The wedding will come, but this moment only happens once!

When you first begin thinking about planning your wedding, it can feel extremely overwhelming. There are so many options out there, and it can be difficult to decide what the perfect path is for you. Before diving into The Knot or going down a rabbit hole of endless Google searches about what your city has to offer, it’s important to first sit down with your partner and discuss your budget. Setting your budget from the beginning will help keep you on track throughout the entire process and will also help narrow things down as you begin making decisions.

Some important questions to start asking yourself (if you haven’t thought about it yet):

  1. What size of wedding do you feel drawn towards? It is important to get on the same page with your fiancé here first!
  2. What aspects of the wedding feel most important to you and your fiancé?
  3. Is there a certain aesthetic you feel aligns with you best?
  4. What story do you want told throughout the day?

Some believe that designing your wedding doesn’t begin until much later in the planning process, when in reality it starts at the very beginning! Many couples create Pinterest & Canva moodboards filled with inspiration and ideas for their wedding day. Keeping this vision in mind from the start is key, because as you move through planning, you’ll be faced with countless decisions that can significantly affect the overall aesthetic. A good rule of thumb is to stay open to the ideas of others, though stay grounded in your personal vision.

One of the biggest decisions right away will be booking your venue.

Traditional wedding Venues can often book far in advance, depending on their popularity and time of year, so it’s important to begin those conversations early. Take the time to tour different spaces and truly imagine if this is where you see your big day unfolding. Ask yourself if the space aligns with the vision you’ve been dreaming of. Talk with the staff and look through photos of past weddings to help you picture your own day. It’s also important to ask if the venue includes anything in their packages, such as catering, rentals, or even florals!

While every wedding is different, starting with your budget, vision, and venue creates a strong foundation. From there, the rest of your vendors can slowly fall into place.  Like your florist, who can help bring your vision to life!

Reaching out to your florist is an especially important step, often earlier in the timeline than many may expect. Sitting down with a florist, particularly one that does more than just flowers, can help you develop your vision beyond what you may have imagined and truly bring it to life. Even if you’re not the biggest fan of flowers, florals help set the backdrop for your day in a bold yet subtle way, that helps carry a special energy from beginning to end.

The earlier you connect with your florist, the more time they have to collaborate with your venue and potentially any other vendors, ensuring everything comes together seamlessly on your wedding day. In the end, your florist ends up becoming one of the key components to achieving the aesthetic you desire.

Wedding planning doesn’t have to feel rushed or overwhelming. With the right conversations early on and a clear sense of what matters most to you, the process can feel exciting, meaningful, and can even be enjoyable! The most beautiful weddings begin with intention — and it all starts here.
