When a Columbus Florist Designs Her Own Wedding

There’s something special that happens when a florist plans her own wedding. The brief doesn’t start with a Pinterest board or a color swatch. It starts with years of industry experience, a deeply personal vision, and a flower most people have never seen at a wedding in their lives.

That’s exactly where Katrina began.

As part of the Fiori Florals team, Katrina has spent her career gravitating toward the unexpected. The moodier, darker, more artful side of floral design that tends to make people stop and look twice. When it came time to plan her own wedding florals in Columbus, she wasn’t about to abandon that instinct.

A Vision Built Around a Feeling

Most couples start with a color palette. Katrina started with a flower she first encountered back in 2011: sarracenia, a striking carnivorous pitcher plant that almost never appears at weddings — and that was entirely the point.

“I remember being completely captivated by it. From that point on, I knew that flower had to be a part of my wedding someday.”

The sarracenia set the tone for everything that followed. Rather than working from a trend or a traditional bridal aesthetic, Katrina built her Columbus wedding flowers around a feeling. “I wanted the florals to feel immersive, slightly wild, and artful — while showcasing flowers and textures that people don’t usually expect to see at weddings.”

Three words guided every decision: ethereal, intriguing, unconventional.

Spanish Moss and an Environment You Could Feel

One of the most striking elements of the reception was also one of the most deliberate: Spanish moss draped from the ceiling throughout the space at The Cove at WatersEdge, hung low enough to brush guests’ heads as they moved through the room.

“I wanted guests to feel surrounded by the environment rather than just observing it from a distance. I was completely fine with it hanging low enough to graze people’s heads. That was part of the experience.”

As a Columbus wedding florist with a deep interest in unconventional design, Katrina knew exactly how far to push it. She also credits the venue team at The Cove at WatersEdge for making the execution feel collaborative and seamless from start to finish.

Details Most Guests Never Noticed

Not every meaningful detail needs to be visible from across the room. Some of Katrina’s favorites were the ones most guests quietly walked past.

Instead of a traditional guest book, the couple used a dart board — a nod to playing darts after Australian football trainings as this was how they first started to get to know each other. Throughout the reception, small gold bunny figurines were tucked into the decor, quiet references to the four rabbits they share at home.

“We kept it very tasteful and unexpected. Little personal details that felt very ‘us’ without overtaking the overall aesthetic.”

Designed by the Team She Trusts

She already knew exactly which who would be bringing her vision to life day of. “I felt unusually relaxed going into the wedding day because I knew my coworkers were there helping behind the scenes. Being surrounded by people I trust professionally allowed me to fully enjoy the experience without worrying about logistics or execution.”

That kind of trust is something we work to earn with every couple, and it was so special to give it to one of our own.

The Takeaway for Columbus Couples

Katrina’s wedding is a reminder that beautiful wedding florals don’t require a formula.

“I hope people take away that wedding design doesn’t have to follow a formula to feel beautiful or meaningful. Some of the most impactful details are the ones that feel deeply personal, even if they’re unexpected or a little unconventional.”

Her advice for couples: “Pause on Pinterest as a checklist and instead start with how you want the day to feel. Pretty things are easy to find, but the most meaningful designs come from decisions that are rooted in personality, memory, and atmosphere.”

Once you’re clear on the feeling, the rest follows. And if you’re looking for a Columbus wedding florist who leads with that same philosophy — you know where to find us.
