Fall Floral Arrangement Tips from a Columbus Florist

Last fall we had the opportunity to go onto Good Day Columbus and speak on bringing fall florals into your home, and giving viewers some tips and tricks on how florists create some of that magic so effortlessly!

Our director, Kristen Serpico, spent the morning with Phil Kelly and Katie McKee and showed them how to make a fall floral arrangement that feels attainable. If you missed the segment (or want a refresher), here are our best fall floral arrangement tips, broken down step by step.

Start With What Inspires You Outside

Our goal with florals is always to ask what you’re inspired by outside and how you can bring that into your home. What colors are you picking up naturally? Fall makes this easy. Look at the leaves, the light, and the way everything softens and warms up, then let that be your palette.

How to Make a Fall Floral Arrangement by Layering

The secret to making an arrangement feel attainable is layering. Build it one step at a time and it never feels like a big overwhelming project.

Step 1: Build your structure

This step makes everything easier. Create a tic tac toe grid across the top of your vessel using waterproof tape, which you can find on Amazon or at craft stores. Prefer something that doesnt use plastic? Chicken wire does the same job and can be reused again and again. Either way, it helps give structure to your design, so you don’t have to pack the vessel as much as you think.

Step 2: Add some greenery

You can cut branches right from your own yard! It’s free, it’s seasonal, and it gives your arrangement a natural, gathered feel.

Step 3: Add soft, pillowy texture

Now add some fullness and texture! Dried hydrangea is a great choice here, and it lasts long after fresh stems have faded.

You can dry your own hydrangea right at home by snipping some branches as the plant begins the dry out. The petals should feel a but papery. And then you can hang them upside down in your home until they completely dry out!

Step 4: Place your focal flower

Now tuck in your focal flowers, like roses. Our biggest tip is to use odd numbers of flowers, because it creates balance and looks effortless instead of stiff!

Step 5: Finish with something whimsical

Last, add the floaty, airy blooms like ranunculus. Keep the stems long to help create height and movement! Since your tape or chicken wire is doing the structural work, these stems have room to breathe since there isn’t an abundance of other blooms in the design to create that structure.

Bring Fall Florals Home

That’s really all there is to it. Pull from what you see outside, build in layers, and let a little structure do the heavy lifting. You might be surprised how quickly it comes together!
